Pylos: A year without justice
The Pylos shipwreck was the deadliest that has ever occurred in an area of Greek responsibility for search and rescue and one of the most tragic in the Mediterranean. A shockingly painful event that was not, however, in the realm of the inevitable. One year on, there is objective evidence and numerous testimonies available, with the common denominator being the responsibility of the Greek authorities for what they did not do and for what they did. It is now clear with certainty that despite the fact that the Greek Coast Guard knew for 15 hours that the overloaded fishing vessel with hundreds of people on board was in a state of distress and was calling for help, it did not activate a rescue operation as required by international law and Greek legislation. Moreover, survivors' testimonies indicate that the Coast Guard attempted to tow the Adriana, resulting in its sinking. The Greek state, with its disturbing tradition of deterrence and repatriation policies, has created a climate of silence and oblivion surrounding the wreck of the Pirlou.
