Abstract
Drawing from Braudel’s analysis of the Mediterranean, this chapter takes a bio-political approach to forced migration in the region, and it highlights the connections between the present and the past. It argues that the recent European obsession with security has distorted the space, environment and political economy of the Mediterranean region. Using Greece as a case study, the chapter seeks to identify the varieties of human rights violations in the context of international law and lack of global responsibilities concerning ‘Asylum at Sea’, and how these impact on current forms of informal hospitality.
