Boat chase with one refugee - migrant dead and five injured
One person died and five others were injured on Friday night off the coast of Symi, when an inflatable boat carrying 17 refugees - migrants crashed into one of the two Coast Guard vessels involved in the chase.
According to the Headquarters of the Limenikos Corps - Greek Coast Guard, the pilot of the speedboat, who was subsequently arrested, had earlier abandoned the boat and dived into the sea to escape.
From the impact, according to the same source, "most of the passengers fell into the sea". The dinghy then sank, while the coastguards rescued all the castaways, all of them men, including a minor. However, five were injured and one was unconscious but recovered with CPR. However, at the Symi Health Centre where they were taken, one of the injured was found to be dead.
